17R/35L Electrical Reconstruction and Taxiway A Centerline Lighting Installation

Project Value: $7.7M

Project Engineer: Foth

Details: Serving as the prime contractor, AFC completed this demanding project in early 2024. The electrical system for 17R/35L was reconstructed along with rehabilitation on other airfield circuits and lighting elements. The new flush mounted LED fixtures installed contained monitoring capability making SDF one of the first in the US to have this feature. 44 concrete panels were replaced as part of this Runway and Taxiway Alpha, each containing new in-pavement lights along with newly installed conduit in existing CTB beneath these panels.

12,000’ 17R/35L serves as UPS’ primary cargo runway at SDF thus constant communication with stakeholders was paramount with weekly progress meetings with LRAA Engineering and Operations to schedule closures and discuss completed and upcoming work. Full closures are only allowed on 17R/35L on Saturdays and Sundays with daily closures on Fridays and Mondays with reopenings occurring both days at 3pm with severe penalties for delays. This presented another challenge of frequent concrete pours on Saturday and Sunday evenings. A significant portion of the contract also involved work on other sections of the airfield which resulted in a demanding schedule frequently resulting in performing work 7 days a week due to various closure restrictions and availability. With the exception of Saturdays and Sundays, all closures were daily meaning our work items for that day must be commenced and completed with conditions restored to safety area compliance by reopening which typically occurred at 3pm. AFC is grateful to all participants in this project including the staff at LRAA, Foth, Garver, E&B Paving, and ADB Safegate, all of which are staffed with elite professionals who were tremendous partners.

Project Highlights:

  • 360 Touch Down Zone, 237 Runway Centerline, 148 Runway Edge and Threshold, 246 Taxiway Centerline, and 17 In-Pavement Guard Light, all converted to new LED fixtures
